Do You Have Doubts?

Well, you are not alone. The Apostles doubted as well. Mark records the following for us:

"When the sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary, the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go and anoint him. Very early when the sun had risen, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb. They were saying to one another, "Who will roll back the stone for us from the entrance to the tomb?" When they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled back; it was very large. On entering the tomb they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a white robe, and they were utterly amazed. He said to them, "Do not be amazed! You seek Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified. He has been raised; he is not here. Behold the place where they laid him. But go and tell his disciples and Peter, 'He is going before you to Galilee; there you will see him, as he told you.'" Then they went out and fled from the tomb, seized with trembling and bewilderment. They said nothing to anyone, for they were afraid. (When he had risen, early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons. She went and told his companions who were mourning and weeping. When they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe."

Sometimes it is hard to believe in things that you can not experience for yourself. It is the human condition. This is why faith is a gift from God. We can't just have faith ourselves.

One of the 12 apostles is (unfortunately, in my opinion) singled out for his doubts - Thomas ("doubting Thomas").

It is because of this passage from John:

"Thomas, called Didymus, one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other disciples said to him, "We have seen the Lord." But he said to them, "Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe." Now a week later his disciples were again inside and Thomas was with them. Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, "Peace be with you." Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be unbelieving, but believe." Thomas answered and said to him, "My Lord and my God!" Jesus said to him, "Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed.""

Yes, Thomas doubted. But, I know I can't condemn him for it, because I am sure I would have had the same response. I just also pray that I can have the eyes of faith Thomas had to see past the human and see the DIVINE - "My Lord and My God". This is why it is a traditional Catholic practice to pray this prayer of faith during the elevation of the host and chalice after the consecration during Mass.
